How Would You Link Global Apathy to Local Apathy?
This video captures the global issue of apathy in a very domestic setting. The reason behind this was that I felt that a lot of people, including myself think that problems on a global scale sometimes feel "too big" to handle. But something that I hoped to capture was that the global problem of apathy starts at home, in the very areas that we are comfortable with and know. If we do not step out of apathy at home, then how can we expect to step out of apathy on a larger, global scale. Apathy is a global issue, but to attack it on a global scale, we must fight it in our own backyards first.
Why Did You Choose This Topic?
The reason I chose this topic of addressing global apathy is because it is something that has recently come to light for me in my own life . The common world view of the western mind is structured by whatever we read in the papers or watch on TV. Nothing ever sticks on our mind and causes us to act unless we experience it, unless we see it first hand and it moves our very being. My entire life up until this past summer, I heard a lot about the things going around me; I attempted to "help" those less fortunate around me, but I just never really cared.
Then, this past summer, I went to Western Africa and actually experienced everything that you hear that goes on globally. I lived with and learned from people who couldn't get enough food every night, who didn't have all of the basic necessities of life that I took for granted. This experience got me really angry not only at all the suffering, but at myself; that I had never cared that all of this had been going on around the world. My experience even further taught me was that all of this hurt, this pain and suffering, wasn't just going on around the world, but in my own hometown, behind all the facade of everything was okay, there were people who didn't have the enough to eat every night, that they didn't have enough clothes, and that we, that I hadn't cared. This was the reason I chose to focus on global apathy. Because I simply had never cared, and that I wanted that to change.
Any Wacky Experiences During the Making of Your Video(s)?
A lot of funny things actually happened during filming. Many were "you had to be there moments" but one I distinctively remember is that I asked one of the actors to "harass" the homosexual couple on scene. He said he knew the exact words that he wanted to say, and on camera he actually approached them and said "I will DESTROY you." It was a very funny moment. Also, in the "attack" scene, my friend was screaming for help and it was very scary hearing the echo in the parking structure; a couple people even walked by and did not help, albeit they probably saw the camera and therefore, didn't help. Haha. Also, my actors were really bad at fake beating up so that was fun watching.
Interesting fact is that I shot everything in one day and edited in one day. Because of school, I only had a weekend to dedicate to this project and I was able to finish it in two days, which was pretty awesome.
Any Last Words?
I hope people enjoyed my video even though it wasn't executed as well as I wanted it to be and that everyone understood that it is more hurtful not to act than you think
